Your Guide for Practical & Effective Ways to Use Aromatherapy
by KG Stiles, Clinical Aromatherapist
Pure essential oils have a wide range of therapeutic benefits. The method applied can effect the results. First, please remember that most essential oils should not be applied neat (undiluted) to the skin. You may, however apply them neat to the palms of your hands or soles of your feet.
The choice of delivery method often depends on the intended goal. We’ll discuss the primary three used most massage in practice.
I. DIRECT INHALATION
Direct inhalation is the method used most in Germany and the one I primarily use as I believe it to be (in most cases) the …
most effective method for getting therapeutic result.
An exception to this is when working specifically to…
promote healthy functioning of muscles and joints
in which case you would…
use a carrier oil for your essential oils.
Stimulating circulation of blood, lymph and nerve flow through some form of movement or a bodywork session prior to inhalation…
greatly enhances the delivery of oils into your system
through inhalation. Dispense 1-3 drops of oil onto a tissue, cotton ball or organic Celtic smelling salts and…
slowly introduce the oils into your system
by breathing in their aroma. Breathe the oils in, slowly at first, then gradually breathe them in more deeply with each inhalation. Continue your
cycles of breathing for 30-60 seconds.
This method is especially helpful for inducing relaxation and sleep, or place a single drop on your pillow. Most pure essential oils are non-staining. Please test first.
Research shows that essential oils are primarily absorbed through your olfactory nerves where they immediately enter your blood stream which distributes them to…
every cell in your body within 20 minutes.
Research studies have shown essential oils to remain in your bloodstream for up to 4-6 hours.

II. AIR DIFFUSER
An air diffuser has a basket in which a pad with drops of oils are applied. A small fan blows cool air through the oils lifting them into the air for dispersal. Good for scenting a room.
III. TOPICAL APPLICATION
In the USA and England dilution in a carrier oil is the primary method used for enjoying the benefits of essential oils. Carrier oils inhibit the rapid evaporation rate of essential oils and allow for safe application of oils to the skin.

Blue Tansy – A natural anti histamine and anti inflammatory known to soothe nervous tension and stress, may use alone or in a blend to relieve sore and achy muscles. Due to its bronchio-dilating effects may be helpful to asthma sufferers or those with sensitivities to environmental & food allergens.
My friend Sylla attests to Blue Tansy’s helpfulness in relieving the effects of radiation treatment.
Eucalyptus – Fresh, powerful, and long lasting, an effective respiratory decongestant. Highly antiseptic, anti-infectious, antibacterial and anti viral. Also a good insect repellent.

German Chamomile – Your first choice for treating inflamed, irritated skin. Acts as a sedative or pain reliever, for “angry” situations, injuries, sprains, and swelling, as well as for various aches and pains, arthritis, colic, cramps, feverish conditions. Excellent for insomnia, relaxes and summons sleep. Good for headaches caused by stress, or tension and may relieve intestinal spasms.
Helichrysum – Highly regenerative, one of the strongest anti inflammatories known. Useful in all skin blends, may be applied neat, without the use of a carrier oil, on bad bruises, and areas of inflammation, pain and swelling. It acts through the blood being reabsorbed into the tissue, removing discoloration and pain caused by pressure on nerves.
Lavender – The most commonly used essential oil. Absolute classic oil for treating burns! Useful for skin care healing and for headaches, bug bites, and sore muscles.
Peppermint – Helpful for migraines, tummy aches, indigestion and fatigue. Good remedy for car or air sickness. Mentally it clears the brain and aids concentration, a restorative in cases of mental fatigue.
