The highest quality essential oil available is used
The right essential oil for a particular condition is chosen
The correct method of application is used
The right dilution amount is used
Oxide and phenol-containing essential oils particularly effective against micro-organisms include: eucalyptus, ravensara, oregano, rosemary cineole, thyme (especially Thymus vulgaris), cinnamon, and clove.

BENEFITS of using essential oils over synthetic drugs:

Less toxic
Do not create resistance as seen with chemical antibiotic
Reinforce the body’s own natural healing mechanism
Support immune function

FORMULATING TREATMENTS FOR ACCIDENTS, INJURY & ILLNESS

PLEASE NOTE: Essential oils are not water soluble you must use a dispersant when adding them to a steam or bath and water may cause the oils to penetrate your system more quickly or cause irritation to sensitive or damaged skin, i.e. blemishes, sores or rash.

Restorative Respiratory Steam – to ease sinus or bronchial problems.Use a Respiratory Steam to relieve sinus congestion, coughs, colds, flu and sore throats.Inhalation of essential oils is one of the simplest, most direct, and effective methods for supporting your respiratory system.

Use steam inhalations when suffering from symptoms of a cold, or flu, or during allergy season. Steaming is also effective for preventing colds, and flu, and supports your immune function. Eucalyptus oil is an excellent respiratory aid, and very effective for steam inhalations to decongest and clear the respiratory system.

STEAM INHALATION TREATMENT

Preparation – what you will need:

Small bowl, preheat with hot water – stainless steel holds heat longer
Bath towel
1-3 drops pure essential oil: eucalyptus, ravensara, lavender, peppermint, rosemary, cypress.
Tissues may be needed

Fill your preheated bowl with steaming hot water, not so hot that it will burn your skin, or mucous membranes.

Add one drop of your essential oil to the hot water. Pour essential oil slowly and carefully, so you don’t pour more than 2-3 drops at most. Too much essential oil may cause a headache. If you do pour more allow the oils to evaporate into the air before steaming, or begin again.

Cover your head with your bath towel, being sure to close your eyes, and lean forward over the bowl of steaming hot waters with essential oil floating on the surface. Use your towel like a tent to capture the steam, and breathe in the steam. Go slow, and sense how the oils are affecting you. You may move closer to the steam (more steam) or further away (less steam) as feels right and comfortable for you.

If the water is too hot, lift up one end of the towel and allow the steam to escape. Continue to breathe in the steam for a several minutes, or for as long as feels right for you. Please keep your eyes shut to prevent any of the pure essential oil from getting into your eyes.

Steam inhalation acts to decongest your mucous membranes, and open and clear your sinuses; be prepared with tissues if needed.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Do a steam inhalation with the pure essential oil you selected, and note the effects in your Aromatherapy Journal.

Humidifier (cool mist) – tonic action relieves congestion, excess mucous & promotes freer, easier breathing

Preparation – what you will need:

Humidifier
3-8 drops pure essential oil: eucalyptus radiata (especially gentle for children!), lavender, cypress (relieves coughing fits), rosemary, lemon

Add 3-8 drops of pure essential oil to the water of your humidifier. Run overnight, or add the essential oils 2-3 times during the day, if running continuously. This is an effective method of using oils with a sick child.

CAUTION: Essential Oils can damage humidifier plastic and rubber parts.

Lymphatic Skin Brushing – Invigorates your skin to promote detoxification, and stimulate your lymphatic system.

1 Tablespoon honey
1 drop pure essential oil: lavender, geranium

Blend 1 drop of pure essential oil in 1 Tablespoon of honey and apply mixture evenly to your natural bristle skin brush and brush your skin. Make sure your gentle, yet brisk brush strokes are upward, toward your heart.

Gently brush upwards from your fingers up to your shoulders, from your toes up to your neck. Include the front and back sides of your body as you breathe deeply. Enjoy the wonderful tingling sensations dancing across your skin. Skin brushing promotes detoxification and lymph flow and is especially effective just before you take a hot shower, or bath.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Do Lymphatic Skin Brushing with the pure essential oil you selected, and note the effects in your Aromatherapy Journal.

TO RELIEVE STRESS & SORE MUSCLES or COLD & FLU SYMPTOMS:

Detoxifying & Invigorating Bath – To relieve Stress & Sore Muscles OR Cold & Flu Symptoms

Preparation – what you will need:

Epson Salts (muscle relaxant, detoxifier)
Baking Soda (vasodilator, skin softener)
1 Teaspoon carrier (honey or cream)
5-8 drops pure essential oil (eucalyptus, ravensara, chamomile, lavender, ginger)

Fill your tub with hot water, add 5-8 drops of pure essential oil that has been mixed in your carrier and swish to disperse in the water. Add a half cup each of Epson Salt (muscle relaxant, detoxifier) and Baking Soda (vasodilator, skin softener) which can also be used as carriers to disperse the oils in your bath water.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Do a Detoxifying & Invigorating Bath with the pure essential oil(s) you selected, and note the effects in your Aromatherapy Journal.

Soothing Hot Compress – for topical application to ease pain and swelling for injuries, i.e. strained muscles, tendons & ligaments and menstrual cramps.

Preparation – what you will need:

Small bowl
Cotton wash cloth or hand towel
1 teaspoon carrier (cream, honey, vegetable oil)
1-6 drops pure essential oil or blend (German chamomile, helichrysum, sweet marjoram, cypress, ginger, rose geranium, rosemary)

Disperse 1-6 drops of pure essential oil in a teaspoon of milk or honey and add to a small bowl of “HOT” water. Absorb the “HOT” water into a wash cloth or hand towel, using protective gloves, wring out excess water and apply compress to area of discomfort, repeat when your cloth cools. You may cover your “HOT” compress with a hot water bottle, or plastic sheet or towel to keep it “HOT” longer.

SPA TREATMENTS FOR SORE MUSCLES, INJURY & ILLNESS

Injury Healing Bath Salts – to relieve muscle soreness & promote rapid healing for soft tissues & joints.

Preparation – what you will need:

Small bowl
1/3 cup Epson Salts (muscle relaxant, detoxifier)
1/3 cup Baking Soda (vasodilator)
1/3 cup Celtic salt (rich in minerals, detoxifier)
3-4 drops pure essential oil (cypress, sweet marjoram, German chamomile, helicrhysum, rosemary)

Blend together one third cup each (equal parts) Epson Salts, Celtic Salts, and Baking Soda. Thoroughly mix in 3-4 drops of your chosen essential oil(s). Add your bath salts mixture to your bath tub filled with steaming hot water and soak for 20-30 minutes, or until waters begin to cool. You can make your aromatic sea salts ahead so that you will always have them on hand whenever the need arises; store in a well sealed glass container in a cool dark place.

Cleansing & Fortifying Sea Salt Bath – to relieve cold & flu symptoms & stimulate immune response.

Natural sea salts are rich in minerals and charged with electrical healing properties that you can especially benefit from in a warm or hot bath. A sea salt bath with pure essential oils is also an effective way to cleanse your chakras and auric energy field.

Preparation – what you will need:

Small bowl
1-4 cups of natural sea salt
3-8 drops of essential oil or blend (Helichrysum, sweet marjoram, German chamomile, ylang ylang, lavender, rosemary.

Add 3-8 drops of pure essential oil or blend to 1 cup of your sea salt in a small bowl. The sea salt acts as a carrier for dispersing your oils into your warm bath. Add your aromatic sea salt to your hot bath water and swish the water to disperse salts into the water. You may add more sea salt to your bath as desired to increase the detoxifying and cleansing action of the sea salt. Soak for 15-30 minutes or until your bath water begins to cool.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Do Cleansing & Fortifying Sea Salt Bath with the pure essential oil you selected, and note the effects in your Aromatherapy Journal.

In a small bowl blend 1-2 drops of essential oil, or blend in your carrier and then thoroughly mix into your foot bath. Soak your feet for 10-15 minutes time, or until the waters begin to become tepid to the touch.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Do Soul Warming Foot Soak with the pure essential oil you selected, and note the effects in your Aromatherapy Journal.

FORMULATING AROMATIC MEDICINE

DILUTION GUIDE for Aromatic Medicine (refer to Class 3 for a complete dilution guide). Please follow this guide to formulate your blends according to your needs, and the circumstances.

1% Dilution (5-6 drops per ounce carrier) – Use for children under 12, and seniors over 65, pregnant women and people with long-term illnesses, or immune system disorders.

2% Dilution (10-12 drops per ounce carrier) – Use for general health and skin care, natural perfumes, bath products, and for your everyday blends.

3% Dilution (15-18 drops per ounce carrier) – Use for specific application blends, acute health conditions, i.e. treating a cold or flu, pain relief, and sports blends.

5% Dilution (28-30 drops per ounce of carrier) – Sports massage blends and short term treatment for specific, acute health conditions.

You will be making a 1 ounce blend of essential oil in a base of vegetable carrier oil. You can apply your ready-to-use formula to key neuro-vascular points, i.e. inside wrists, elbows, in the groove behind your ears, sinus points, base of skull, behind knees, armpits, supra sternal notch, just below the inside of your collar bone, and gently massage in, or use for local application.

I recommend using light coconut oil for its superior absorbency and because it is the only oil fully metabolized by the body. It’s the only oil (that I’m aware of) with the capacity for being absorbed through the skin and fatty tissues to effectively carry essential oil into the blood supply.

Aromatic Medicine Blending Guidelines:

Essential oils – you can blend up to three different essential oils. Choose essential oils according to their properties, actions and effects to formulate an aromatic medicine blend to treat a particular condition, i.e. accident, injury or illness.1 ounce of carrier oil – light coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, or any other vegetable oil you’d like to put on your skin.

In your Aromatherapy Journal write down the names of each essential oil you will be using. You will record the number of drops you add to your blend for your recipe.

Add one drop of your selected essential oil, along with its aroma quality and effect.

Add one more drop of your selected essential oil, along with its aroma quality and effect

Add one more drop of your selected essential oil, along with its aroma quality and effect

Stir the mixture by using a sterile instrument – or if your blend is in bottle, simply tighten the cap and shake it a few times.

SAMPLE YOUR AROMATIC MEDICINE BLEND’S AROMA: You will probably notice that the aroma of some essential oils is lighter than other oils in your aromatic medicine blend, so you will notice its uplifting scent first.

As your blend synergizes the aroma qualities will change and take on a unique character. Write down your aroma experiences for deepening your awareness of each essential oil and your aromatic medicine blend. Dispense a little of your aromatic medicine blend in your hands, rub your palms together and inhale slowly.

You will notice that the aroma of certain essential oils linger longer in your memory. The aroma qualities and language of aromas sing to your senses like muses inspiring you to formulate a balanced blend for harmonizing body, mind, spirit and emotions.

As you continue to experiment with your aromatic formulations you will naturally get a feel for when to emphasize a particular aromatic note to achieve your desired results.

Now add one additional drop of any one of the oils that especially calls to you. Record each drop you add to your blend in your Aromatherapy Journal, mix the blend again, and inhale.

Continue to add one drop at a time of any of the oils you selected until you arrive at an aromatic blend that pleases your senses within the 1-5% range; that’s between 5-30 drops of essential oil.Keeping track of the number of drops of each essential oil while blending ensures you won’t forget the exact formulation of a blend should it be a memorable one for you!

Try these recipes for four types of aromatic medicine formulas. Blend into 1 ounce of carrier oil:

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Please note in your Aromatherapy Journal the pure essential oil(s) you use, the % dilution of carrier oil (if used), and the actions & effects you notice from using the pure essential oil(s), blend(s), or dilution(s).

1% Dilution — Headache Blend (5-6 drops total)
Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus globulus – 1 drops
Peppermint, Mentha piperita – 2-3 drops
Lavender, Lavendula angustifolia – 2 drops

2% Dilution — Immune Stimulant Blend (10-12 drops total)
Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus globules or radiata- 5 drops
Rosemary cineole – Rosmarinus officinalis ct cineole – 2 drops
Thyme – Thymus vulgaris – 3-5 drops

3% Dilution – Cold & Flu Relief Blend (15-18 drops total)
Cinnammon – Cinnamomum zeylanicum – 2-3 drops
Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus globulus & radiata – 6-7 drops
Ravensara – Ravensara aromatica – 7-8 drops

5% Dilution – Sore Muscle Blend (28-30 Drops total)
Peppermint, Mentha piperita – 4-5 drops
Lavender, Lavendula angustifolia – 10 drops
Marjoram – (Origanum marjorana) 14-15 drops

Rub a little of your aromatic medicine formulation for headache, immune stimulant, cold & flu relief blend on your wrists, your temples, the sides of your neck or chest. Try the sore muscle blend on a tense muscle or painful joint.

Note in your Aromatherapy Journal how you respond to your aromatic medicine blend over the next several days. Try out your aromatic medicine blends on yourself, family and friends. Observe how others respond to them.

Note in you journal how the aroma of your aromatherapy blends change over time and after you apply it on your skin. By trying out different blends with yourself and others you are learning about how different aromas affect different people. Through exploring the uses and benefits of essential oils they will become a valuable addition to your everyday life.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Select pure essential oils to use for this assignment by their chemical properties. Please note in your Aromatherapy Journal the pure essential oil(s) used and its active chemical properties, the % dilution of carrier oil (if used), and the actions & effects you notice from using the pure essential oil, blend, or dilution.

SANITIZING ANTI-MICROBIAL ROOM SPRAY – powerful protection, immune stimulantPreparation – what you will need:2oz colored glass atomizer misting bottlePurified waterWitch hazel or alcohol120-180 drops pure essential oil (lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon, clove, thyme, ravensara, lavender, tea tree, rosemary, oregano).

DIRECTIONS – Half fill a two (2) ounce colored glass bottle, that has an atomizer or misting top, with purified water, and follow the basic aromatherapy blending guidelines for formulating a recipe, add your pure essential oil one drop at a time, shake well after the addition of each drop, and spray to test the aroma quality and effect. Continue to add drops of pure essential oil until you’ve added 120-180 drops total (10-15% dilution).

As always the amount of oil you use depends on the purpose of your aromatic mist. This is an especially strong dilution please use with care and avoid direct skin contact as it may be a skin irritant.

Shake well and use as a room spray, or spray on a wet cotton cloth to wipe down common use areas such as door knobs, counter tops, wash basins, and toilets. If desired you may add alcohol, or witch hazel to act as a dispersant for your essential oils to remain blended in the water, otherwise the oils will float on the surface and you’ll need to shake your bottle well before spraying each time.

Healing Salve or Ointment (Recipe makes about 2 ounces)

Preparation – what you will need:

Double boiler, or
Pyrex glass measuring cup inside large pot of water (homemade double boiler)
¼ cup light coconut oil
2-2 1/2 teaspoons beeswax (add less beeswax if you’d like an even looser consistency)
30-36 drops essential oil, (lavender: anti-viral use with thyme, clove & tea tree for cold sores, herpes, athletes foot), (helichrysum: supreme for injury healing use with German chamomile, lavender), (peppermint: analgesic, pain reliever, anti-itch, use for poison oak & ivy, insect bites & stings, also a good blood cleanser; its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties make it an effective first aid treatment for cuts and scrapes, and to prevent the spread of infection), (cypress: powerful astringent use with helichrysum for treating varicose veins & bleeding hemorrhoids).

Optional: May add a few drops of vitamin E oil.

DIRECTIONS –

Put beeswax into light coconut oil and heat in a double boiler, or for a homemade double boiler use a Pyrex glass measuring cup inside a large pot of water. Heat mixture until beeswax melts. Remove measuring cup from pan and cool slightly before adding your pure essential oils – blend in your essential oils gently with a sterile instrument. Pour your salve or ointment into 1/4 or 1/2 ounce colored glass jars and allow to set-up completely before using. May store tightly sealed in a cool, dry place, or refrigerate for longer shelf life.

BONUS: NEURO-VASCCULAR RELEASE TECHNIQUE

DIAPHRAGM RELEASE

Your diaphragm is an organ of respiration. The Diaphragm Release technique will free your diaphragm from any restriction, as well as reset and balance your autonomic (fight/flight) stress response. Through correct breathing your diaphragm is where you process your emotions. The neuro-vascular point for the Vagus nerve, which is one of the controls for the relaxation and healing response, is also located in this area. The Diaphragm Release will also help to clear, balance and amplify your Solar Plexus, or 3rd Chakra, energy center.

MOVES ARE ALWAYS MADE WITH YOUR BREATH OUT!
