AROMATHERAPY DELIVERY METHODS

Pure essential oils have a wide range of therapeutic uses and benefits. The method applied can effect the results. Generally you can use essential oils within half an hour or so of each other; it’s individual to you depending upon your absorption and response rate.

Your choice of delivery method often depends on your intended goal. It’s best to use a cool diffusion method as heating essential oils alters their molecular structure and hence their effectiveness.

1) DIRECT INHALATION (Review) is the method used most in Germany and the one I primarily uses for best therapeutic results. Dispense 1-3 drops of your pure essential oil on a cotton ball, inhale using the slow Rhythmic Full Breath or Turbulent Breathing method described below.

FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS

Slow Rhythmic Full Breath – Close your eyes and inhale. Breathe in slowly and pause briefly on your inhaled breath. Then slowly exhale, letting go of any tension. Repeat this slow, rhythmic breathing for 30-60 seconds. Allow yourself to relax for a moment into a feeling of well-being.

Turbulent Breathing – Close your eyes and through a series of four short, rapid direct inhalations, repeated four times, you quickly saturate the olfactory bulb which stimulates your neuro-receptors and allows the aromatic vapors to enter your lungs for immediate released into your blood stream.

Please Note: Stimulating circulation of your blood, lymph and nerve flow through rhythmic breathing in conjunction with inhalation of aromatic oils enhances their delivery into your system!

2) MICRO DIFFUSION uses a nebulizing diffuser that will break oil into millions of micro particles. It disperses oils using a cool mist, without the heating that can render them therapeutically less beneficial.

Research shows that cold-air diffusing certain oils may:

  • Reduce bacteria, fungus, mold and unpleasant odors
  • Relax and relieve tension, as well as clear the mind
  • Help with weight management
  • Improve concentration, alertness and mental clarity

Start by diffusing oils only 15-30 minutes per day. As you become accustomed to the oils and recognize the effects, increase the time. In illness, inhale near the “mouth” of the nebulizer. A short session of breathing in the oils for 4-5 minutes should be sufficient, repeat every few hours.

3) AIR DIFFUSER has a basket in which a pad with drops of oils is applied. A small fan blows cool air through the oils lifting them into the air for dispersal. This is a cost effective way for diffusing the oils, has the benefits of micro-diffusion, and especially good for scenting a room.

Through cellular respiration, or breathing, aromatic vapors stimulate your olfactory nerves which send a signal to your brain’s neuro-receptors, triggering numerous electro-chemical responses.

PLEASE REVIEW your aromatherapy diagram “Electro-chemical Effects of Essential Oils” illustrating the effects of essential oils.

Through inhalation essential oil vapors also enter your lungs for immediate release into your blood stream for distribution to every cell in your body.

PLEASE REVIEW your aromatherapy diagram “Aromatherapy Delivery Pathways” illustrating different methods of application and their pathways of distribution in your body, and the organs and systems affected.

Research shows that through inhalation essential oils will remain in your bloodstream for up to 4-6 hours.

ESSENTIAL OILS WILL:

  1. Purify by removing metallic particles and toxins from the air.
  2. Increase atmospheric oxygen by releasing oxygenating molecules into the air.
  3. Increase the body’s ability to transport oxygen into the cells. The lipid-soluble structure of essential oils allows them to easily pass through cell membranes of the nose and carry oxygen and nutrients into the cells. One of the primary causes of disease in both plants and humans is the inability of nutrients to penetrate the cell. This results in cell deterioration which leads to cell mutation, creating a host for bacteria and disease.
  4. Increase ozone & negative ions, which inhibits bacterial growth.
  5. Destroy odors from mold, cigarettes, and animals.
  6. Fill the air with fresh, herbal aromatic scent.

Essential Oils are Chemical Cleaners

Essential oils can make chemicals nontoxic by fracturing their molecular structure. European scientists have found that essential oils work as natural chelators, bonding to metallics and chemicals and ferrying them out of the body.

4) CARRIER OILS for diluting essential oils is the primary method used in the USA and England for enjoying the benefits of essential oils.

Carrier oils inhibit the rapid evaporation rate of essential oils and allow for safe application of oils to the skin. You need to experiment with areas of application on your skin for best absorption and response rate, generally a neuro vascular point(s) near the location you are treating.

SAFE SKIN APPLICATION:

How much essential oil should you put into your carriers for safe skin application?

Generally, effective blends for adults are made using a dilution ratio of 1, 2, or 3 percent of essential oil to the carrier. Perfume oils, expensive oils such as Rose and Helichrysum, and oils or blends used to treat acute conditions such as injury or illness may be in higher dilutions of 5-10%.

1% Dilution (5-6 drops per ounce carrier) – Use for children under 12, and seniors over 65, pregnant women and people with long-term illnesses, or immune system disorders. A 1% dilution is a good place to start with individuals who are generally sensitive to aromas, chemicals, or other environmental pollutants.

2% Dilution (10-12 drops per ounce carrier) – Use for general health, massage and skin care, natural perfumes, bath products, and for your everyday blends.

3% Dilution (15-18 drops per ounce carrier) – Use for specific application blends, acute health conditions, i.e. treating a cold or flu, pain relief, and sports blends.

5% Dilution (28-30 drops per ounce of carrier) – Sports massage blends, natural perfumes, and short term treatment for specific, acute health conditions.

10% Dilution (58-60 drops per ounce of carrier) – Very expensive essential oils like Rose, Helichrysum, and Neroli pure essential oils are often made available in a 10% dilution of carrier oil. Essential oil blends for natural perfumes, and specific applications may also be found in 10% dilutions.

When making larger quantities of blends of three (3) ounce or more you can try using less essential oil than recommended above as you may find the need to double the amount of essential is unnecessary to achieve effectiveness when making larger quantities of blends.

BELOW ARE SAMPLE dilution guidelines to use for making your aromatherapy products:

DILUTION GUIDE FOR SAFE SKIN APPLICATION:

Standard Dilution Amounts for Essential Oils:

  • Adults: 15 drops EO in 30ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • 18 years age: 10-12 drops EO in 30ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • 10-18 years age: 6-9 drops EO in 30 ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • 5-10 years age: 5 drops EO in 30 ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • 4 years age, elderly, infirm: 4 drops EO in 30 ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • 3 years age: 3 drops EO in 30 ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • 2 years age: 2 drops EO in 30 ml or 1 ounce carrier oil
  • Newborn – 2 years age: 1 drop in 30 ml or 1 ounce carrier oil

General Fluid Conversion Guide:

1ml = 20 drops *EO
3.75ml = 1 dram = 1/8oz = 75 drops EO
5ml = 1tsp = 100 drops EO
15ml = 3tsp (1 Tblsp) = 1/2 oz = 300 drops EO
30ml = 2 Tblsp = 8 drams = 1oz = 600 drops EO

* EO = Essential Oil

Please use caution in applying essential oils to broken skin as this can cause severe irritation and may lead to an immune system reaction known as “sensitization.”

Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Handle and care for your essentials oils as you would any product for therapeutic use. When using essential oils in dilution with your child if they give any indication the aroma is too strong or there is any skin sensitivity please dilute your essential oils further.

FREQUENCY OF USE – Essential oils should be used sparingly. Essential Oils are very concentrated! Remember one drop equals one to four cups or more of dried plant matter. Never smell essential oils straight out of the bottle. As with herbs the general rule for frequency of use is 3 weeks on and 1 week off or 5 days on and 2 days off. Continual use of an essential oil or aromatic remedy may result in your developing a tolerance to its effect so that it is no longer as effective for promoting the desired therapeutic results.

Please refer to your Safety Guide for further information related to diluting your pure essential oils for safe skin application.

A NOTE ABOUT CARRIER OILS: I highly recommend pure light coconut oil as the most ideal carrier oil for pure essential oils. Here’s why:

Coconut oil is fully metabolized by the body and, unlike most oils, not absorbed into the fatty cells and tissues of the body, making it an ideal carrier for essential oils to move through the fat cells beneath the dermis and into the blood vessels serving muscles, etc. As well Light Coconut oil remains liquid at room temperature and, because of its light consistency, will not clog skin pores, making it suitable to use on sensitive or problem skin.

LIGHT COCONUT OIL ( Cocos nucifera ) Unique qualities for You to Know About

You may be familiar with the pure, whole coconut oil which solidifies at room temperature, but you haven’t yet experienced Pure Light Coconut Oil, also referred to as fractionated coconut oil.

Pure Light Coconut Oil shares, along with Jojoba oil, the distinction of being closest in molecular structure to your skin’s own natural sebum, making it more readily absorbed into your skin and ideal for use in natural skin care and massage products.

Coconut Oil fully metabolized by the body and, unlike most oils, is not absorbed into the fatty cells and tissues of the body, making it an ideal carrier for essential oils to make it through the fat cells beneath the dermis and into the blood vessels serving muscles, etc.

Its anti-fungal properties make light coconut oil especially suitable for use in your fungicidal essential oil blends, i.e. athlete’s foot treatment.

As well light Coconut Oil remains liquid at room temperature and, because of its light consistency, will not clog skin pores, making it suitable to use on dry, sensitive or problem skin.

Excellent for all your cooking and baking needs Light Coconut Oil’s nutritious value can be enjoyed in recipes that require high heat!

Another remarkable fact about Pure Light Coconut Oil is that, due to its molecular structure, it is not subject to oxidation. This means that it has an almost infinite shelf life with little possibility of ever going rancid.

Light Coconut Oil is water soluble and easily washes out of most fabrics, sheets, towels, and table linens, leaving no stains or rancid odor, making it ideal for the massage therapist.

Being odorless it makes an ideal carrier for aromatic oils. You can use it as an extender for more expensive pure essential oils. Light Coconut Oil adds a silky, smooth light quality to other more expensive carrier oils like Jojoba.

Light Coconut Oil is so light you can use it in a spray bottle for misting on skin applications; it won’t clog your atomizer pump.

Light or fractionated (refined) Coconut Oil is produced by heat, rather than cold pressing, and is usually deodorized which makes it ideal as an aromatherapy carrier oil.

Light Coconut Oil softens and lubricates the skin and is wonderful for treating conditions for which a “totally natural” carrier oil might actually exacerbate the problem as in the case of using essential oils to treat severely damaged skin, a totally natural carrier oil could introduce molds, bacteria or fungi to the skin, creating even more problems.

Using a refined and sterilized carrier oil when treating sensitive skin conditions could prevent further problems from occurring, and promote the intended beneficial results.

Light Coconut Oil is one of the most effective body moisturizers available. Use it as a base for essential oils, on your skin as a moisturizer, after exposure to the sun and at night before bed to nourish your skin. Its cooling and moisturizing action serve to protect your skin while helping it to retain moisture.

I use Light Coconut oil for my own personal skin care and absolutely love the results! It makes a great base for sensitive skin care products, and its “light” texture makes it suitable for all skin types, especially healing for dry, itchy, inflamed or sensitive skin. Light Coconut Oils also makes an excellent nail and cuticle treatment.

The fact that Light Coconut Oil is fully metabolized by the body makes it the only “true” carrier oil for essential oils as it will transport essential oils through the fat cells and into the blood stream serving muscles, nerve tissue, etc.

Lack of rancidity makes Light Coconut Oil perfect for pure essential oil based perfumes.

JOJOBA OIL ( Simmondsia californica ) Unique Qualities for You to Know About

More like a wax than an oil in its constituency Jojoba’s composition closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum. Because of Jojoba oil’s resemblance to the skin’s natural sebum it will readily penetrate through your skin cell tissue and won’t clog pores making it an excellent choice for beauty and skin care treatments.

Because of its compatibility with your skin tissue Jojoba Oil is highly nourishing to all skin types and its anti-inflammatory properties have a soothing effect on irritated or inflamed skin cells and connective tissues.

Jojoba oil’s regulating action also makes it an excellent skin, hair and scalp re-conditioner! A natural antioxidant Jojoba Oil is one of the longest lasting carrier oils with a long shelf life.

CELTIC SALTS or Grey Salt, as it is sometimes referred to, is a “moist” unrefined sea salt usually found along the coastal areas of France. Its light grey, almost light purple color comes from the clay found in the salt flats. Celtic salt is collected by hand using traditional Celtic methods. Celtic Salt has gained great fame in the mainstream culinary world in the last few years and is considered by many to be the best quality salt available.

Celtic salt is available in coarse, stone ground fine and extra fine grain. The natural moistness of the green clay in this Celtic salt allows for fast penetration of your pure essential oils, making it an excellent carrier for their aromatic scent. Another remarkable feature of Celtic salts is how long lasting your aromatherapy oils will stay for inhalation purposes once absorbed and preserved in the Celtic salt. Consider using Celtic smelling salts as a carrier for your more expensive oils like Rose and Helichrysum. You will love the steadfast company of your aromatherapy smelling salts!

NATURAL BEESWAX makes an excellent carrier wax for the soul soothing scents of pure essential oils! Beeswax comes in many different qualities. I recommend wax that is natural, unrefined, and aromatic. It comes already cut into tiny little pellets, making it easy to melt for blending in your carrier oil and essential oils for making aromatherapy products. Beeswax can be used as a base for creams, balms, salves, ointments, body butters, and lotions. The more beeswax you add to your recipe the more dense your product will be.

SEA SALT is excellent for cleansing and detoxification purposes. The electro-magnetic effect of Sea Salts serves to draw impurities out of the body, and neutralizes the effect of radiation emissions from cell phones, microwaves, computers, etc. As well Sea Salt gives an electrical charge to your electro-magnetic field and enhances your life force energy. Take a weekly sea salt bath, using one (1) cup or more of Sea Salts and essential oil(s) of your choice to rid yourself of built-up toxins, as well as increase your circulation for improved health and well-being. Sea Salt is very inexpensive and readily available at most health food stores.

ROSEHIP SEED OIL aka Rosa Mosqueta (Rosa Rubignosa) excellent for treating dry, itchy, scaly, and cracked skin. Rosehip oil is highly recommended for its skin regenerative properties and to heal a multitude of skin conditions, including eczema, and psoriasis, as well as to fade old scars. May use Rose Hip as a moisturizer for treating burns and sun damaged skin, or dry, mature skin conditions. Rose Hip Oil has a very high rancidity rate!

ALMOND OIL ( Prunus amygdalus var. dulcus ) one of the most popular vegetable carrier oils used in Aromatherapy and as a lubricant for Massage. Almond oil is very emollient, and excellent for conditioning the skin. It has a warm, sweet, nutty aroma, clear in color, and readily available in health food stores. Almond oil has a high rancidity rate.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Enjoy Aroma Soul Journey to release the past & Live Fully in the present Moment “Ho’oponopono Forgiveness Meditation” a guided empowerment meditation mp3 podcast (click below to play or download, right click and ‘save target as’ for PC) and/or experience a selected essential oil from the monoterpene family.

PROPER STORAGE OF YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS:

Essential oils are highly volatile and will quickly evaporate when exposed to the air so care must be taken to store them appropriately. Keep your essential oils tightly sealed in dark glass bottles and store them in a cool, dark place out of the sunlight and out of the reach of children and animals.

Never store pure essential oils in plastic bottles as both oil and bottle will perish.

Essential oils that have been unopened and properly stored in a cool, dark location will keep and maintain their potency for many years; except for the quicker evaporating citrus oils, conifers and firs (Pine, Spruce, Cypress, etc.) which have a shorter shelf life because of oxidation which causes them to lose any antiseptic qualities.

Citrus oils are the most volatile of all the essential oils. Please take special care to keep them tightly sealed and store them in a darkened area that is both dry and cool.

You may consider refrigeration for your citrus oils, blue oils, i.e. Chamomile, Blue Tansy, and Yarrow, and conifers and firs, as long as the oils are kept in a dry condition and being stored long term, not being dispensed daily.

BONUS: HO’OPONOPONO FORGIVENESS MEDITATION

“When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.” ~ Catherine Ponder

Ho’oponopono means to “make right” and is the Hawaiian ritual for forgiveness. Ho’oponopono restores your light or energy body and your e-motion, or energy in motion. Through your light body you are connected with all of life. Through your e-motion you are always affecting everyone around you by your thoughts, words, feelings and actions. Anytime is a good time to do Ho’oponopono. To clear repressed emotion in your energy body I recommend doing Ho’oponopono as a daily ritual. At the time of a full moon is also a good time to do Ho’oponopono as the moon’s natural release of electro-magnetic energy as it begins to wane assists with the process of letting go.

Through performing this forgiveness meditation you will be loving and accepting the shadow, lost parts of your self, and powerfully activating the law of grace to operate fully in your life. Through the power of grace you can know the blessing of absolute and unconditional self love and acceptance, and awaken your compassionate heart. In truth when you love yourself completely you love everything and everyone through all dimensions of time and space, past, present and future. This simple act of transmutation, bringing your darkness into the light, provides wonderful nourishment for your soul, and assists every living creature on planet earth, and your awareness of your actions assisting everyone multiplies the effects of your meditation. Ho’oponopono Forgiveness Meditation empowers you to shine with brilliance and renewed Self love.

Ho’oponopono in essence means to make things right with your ancestors, or to make right and create peace and harmony with the people you have relationships with; those with whom you are entangled, or connected, and most especially with yourself.

In the Eastern cultures there is a tradition of honoring your ancestors. Being aligned with and cleansing ancestral relations is considered absolutely essential for prosperity at all levels of your life. Without reverence and gratitude for your ancestors, your prosperous circumstances will always be severely limited. In Japan, China, and the Hawaiian traditions it’s important to cleanse any past problems you may have had in relationships, especially with one’s relatives.

There may also be family patterns you do not want to continue. Generational themes are passed along through the family lineage, like depression, poverty consciousness, addiction, or other unfortunate character traits. Ho’oponopono allows you to cleanse your ancestral lineage. This cleansing and healing of relationships within your family lineage brings you the highest and greatest good fortune!

For the Ho’ponopono meditation you will need – A white candle

Calm your mind and sit quietly. Allow yourself to be quietly present with your Self. Within you is a sacred inner space where the creative spark of life dwells and animates your being. This is your own personal pilot light that you can turn to as needed for guidance. Now is the time to go within your sacred inner space and be still.

Light your white candle and focus on the flame. The candle’s light is a reflection of the Divine spark of light within you.

The Process of Ho’oponopono:

Here’s my own simplified version of Ho’oponopono for healing yourself of any uncomfortable feelings within you, and between you and others. Remember that what you see in another is a reflection; a mirror of something within you, so all healing is self-healing. The Course in Miracles says, “What you perceive in another you are strengthening in yourself.”

No one else has to do this meditation for you to experience the desired results. Do Ho’oponopono with every person in your life with whom you feel misaligned, including conflicting parts within yourself. You may repeat the Ho’oponopono Meditation as needed to cleanse all negative emotional blockages.

See the person with whom you feel discomfort within a healing circle of light. See yourself within this same healing circle of light. See a beautiful cord of golden light above your head connecting you with your greater self, or guardian angel. See a golden cord above the other person’s head to their greater self, or guardian angel. Then see a golden cord of light between your greater self and the other person’s greater self. Now see a golden cord of light from your heart to the other person’s heart. Feel the free flow of love moving through the golden cord of light connecting you with the other person.

To heal any split or feeling of separation within you, or between you and another person, first say with genuine feeling, “I apologize,” and then, “Please forgive me.”

You say this to focus your awareness on any thought, feeling, attitude, or behavior that has gotten into your bodymind system, like a virus, and is disrupting your peace of mind and heart based love energies. You don’t need to know why or understand why you think, feel or have certain behaviors.

By saying “I apologize,” you are asking for forgiveness inside yourself in order to release and let go of the bad feelings of discomfort like guilt, and shame inside of you. Forgiveness does not mean you are condoning anyone’s behavior. Forgiveness simply means you no longer wish to suffer from a past issue.

End by saying with genuine feeling, “I love you,” followed by, “Thank you.” Continue repeating, “I love you,” and, “Thank you,” for as long as needed until you feel completely free. You may return as needed until you feel complete resolution at the core of your being. Remember to breathe deeply and exhale as you let go of any toxic emotions and stagnant energy.

The sound of the words, “I love you,” acts to transmute the vibration of life force energy from stuck to flowing. “I love you,” reconnects you to your wholeness (Holi-ness). Since the ‘Zero Point’ field or Akasha is absolute pure love, and has ‘zero’ limits, when you express genuine feeling of love you automatically begin to resonate and harmonize with a state of ever flowing grace.

CONCLUDE your Ho’oponopono meditation with, “Thank you,” to express your gratitude that harmony has been restored.

End your Ho’oponono meditation by looking into the flame of your white candle and saying aloud:

God/Goddess and all that is,
Angels, guides, ancestors, teachers, and friends,
I call upon all who love me to witness for me now,
In deep appreciation for my soul’s journey
I acknowledge my unfoldment,
Bless my path as I release past struggles,
and burdens from my life.
And so it is.

After completing your Ho’oponopono Forgiveness Meditation imagine yourself joined with others in a circle of compassion sharing the experience of conscious evolution. You may feel inspired to take some action if so, listen to your wise heart and take action immediately, no matter how tiny the action step, take it! Ultimately Forgiveness is a mystical revelation and experience in which the Law of Grace is activated to free you from your karmic (cause and effect) entanglements.
